The Birmingham CAN!

Team 2004

WHO?

Birmingham CAN! is a unique programme of support for voluntary and community organisations to help them tackle social exclusion in Birmingham.

The programme is directed by a broad-based partnership, through a Steering Group. Birmingham CAN! is funded through the Government's Single Regeneration Budget Round 4 (SRB4). A staff team is employed on behalf of the Partnership by Birmingham Voluntary Service Council, which is the accountable body for the programme.

Birmingham CAN! was the first SRB programme to be led by the voluntary sector, and this approach has been a learning curve for all involved. Our under-lying vision has remained constant throughout....

"The Birmingham CAN! vision is to harness the potential of individuals and local communities so they are better able to benefit from and contribute to regeneration activity in Birmingham. In doing so, we will create and sustain a strong, dynamic and resourceful community and voluntary sector able to connect at a very local level with those on the margins of our society to promote successful and lasting people centred regeneration."

WHAT DO YOU DO?

The Programme cannot solve the problems of social exclusion on its own. But it can support the voluntary sector in its role as a catalyst for change in a marginalised neighbourhoods and communities by:

  • Developing new economic activities
  • Delivering local services in ways which respect diversity and cultural differences
  • Developing locally based networks and activities which support social inclusion and enable economic regeneration to take place

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?

Birmingham CAN! is now in its last year.

The programme has funded a number of projects over the past 6 years. To find our more about those projects, and to see what events are new or which projects are ongoing please look through the site. The Birmingham CAN! maybe in its last year but the programme still has a lot to offer.

As the programme reaches its final year, the concentration is on research and pulling together the lessons we've learnt. In this way we hope to leave a valuable legacy to the voluntary and community sector.
